How To Renovate While You’re Renting

November 15th, 2019

It can feel like your hands are tied when it comes to adding your own personal flair to a rental property. If you’ve binge-watched The Block and feel a little inspired, here are some easy ways to implement your strokes of creative genius – all without annoying your landlord!

1. Light it up

Changing your lighting fixtures is a simple way to add a little pizzazz to a tired rental. Whether you want to make a feature out of a new light, or you just want to mix it up and keep it fresh, new fixtures are a way to let your inner interior designer flourish! Make sure you keep the original lighting fixtures stored somewhere safe, so you can easily pop them back in when you move on.

2. Mirror, mirror

Mirrors can add some serious depth and an illusion of space to cramped rental properties (not to mention the selfie opportunities!). Hang your new mirror with wall mounts that come off easily so you won’t ruin any paint (and keep your landlord at ease). Pro-tip: If you want to add more light to any darker areas, position your mirror to reflect natural light, and double the efficiency of those rays! Mirrors also make a great focal point, so don’t shy away from jazzing up your rental by hanging your mirror front and centre.

3. Turn your home green

Plants are a damage-free way to add some life to any bland room. Not only does a little green make your space look a little zen and luscious, but plants also have a bunch of added benefits such as reducing dust levels, and purifying your air. If you can barely remember to water yourself, let alone a living breathing plant specimen, fake plants are an equally cute (and cheap!) way to revamp your place.

4. Make your walls pop

Wallpaper has come a long way since when your Grandma was redecorating her family home. Nowadays you can get easily removable wallpaper that won’t damage the paint, and will give your room a whole new vibe.  Alternatively, use any leftover wall mounts you have from your mirrors and display your favourite pieces of art, tapestries, or just pictures of you and your mates. In case of any paint chipping mishaps, always grab the name and brand of the paint on your walls from your landlord, just for extra peace of mind.

Before you start going all House Rules contestant on your place, it’s a smart move to run your ideas past your landlord, just to make sure they’re a-ok with your artistic vision.
