In order to get the biggest return, whether you\u2019re a working individual or a business owner, it (literally) pays to do your research and make sure you\u2019re aware of all the benefits you could be receiving back from the Australian Taxation Office. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, we take a thorough look at the kinds of items and services you can claim on, so whether you\u2019re using a tax agent or lodging your claim yourself, you\u2019ll always get the maximum possible amount back in your account. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What should I be claiming? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a comprehensive list of items you should be claiming on your next tax return. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your tax agent fees \u2013 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, if you\u2019re using a tax agent to lodge your claim, be sure to keep the receipt for the service they\u2019ve provided you \u2013 you\u2019ll be able to claim it back on next year\u2019s tax return!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The kilometres you\u2019ve travelled for work <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 If you drive a lot for work, whether it\u2019s from suburb to suburb or city to city, be sure to keep evidence of the kilometres you\u2019ve travelled, as well as any incidental costs for getting to location to location (such as fuel top-ups). These expenses are generally cost deductible, so the next time you hop into your car to head to a meeting or run an errand, remember to jot down the kilometres travelled.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: travel to and from your normal place of work cannot be claimed \u2013 only travel outside of the normal scope of your working day.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Any donations you\u2019ve made <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 If you\u2019ve been a generous soul this past year and have donated more than $2 to charity (and you\u2019ve held onto the receipts), you\u2019re able to claim this back on tax\u2026 now that\u2019s what we call good karma! However, if you\u2019ve received something in return for the donation (such as a branded novelty item or a ticket in a raffle) unfortunately you won\u2019t be able to claim. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Work uniforms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 If your position requires for you to wear a compulsory uniform that has a business logo on it, you\u2019re able to claim these costs back. You also may be able to claim on dry cleaning costs (as long as you\u2019ve kept the receipts). Remember that expenses of up to $150 don\u2019t need to be supported with receipts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Expenses associated with working from home \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019re lucky enough to work from home, you\u2019re able to claim back some of the costs that are associated with running a home office. You\u2019ll need to keep receipt records of the costs that you\u2019ve incurred, like internet bills, furniture, phone lines and stationery. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Sun protection \u2013 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your work requires you to be outside, whether you\u2019re working on a job site for a full day or you\u2019re just assessing a location for 15 minutes, you can claim back on sun protection costs. This includes hats, protective sunglasses and sunscreen &#8211; so once again, be sure to hold onto your receipts!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Overtime meals \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you get paid an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/individuals\/income-and-deductions\/deductions-you-can-claim\/other-deductions\/overtime-meals\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overtime meal allowance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of your job and you purchase food and drink when you work overtime, you can claim these costs back. You don\u2019t have to provide written evidence if you claim up to the reasonable allowance expense amount (this will be set by your employer), but you\u2019ll need to provide a receipt if you go over this amount. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Certain types of self-education \u2013<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you undertake a type of study that leads to a formal qualification and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/individuals\/income-and-deductions\/deductions-you-can-claim\/self-education-expenses\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improves the specific skills or knowledge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you need to undertake your current work activities, you may be able to claim the course costs back on tax. If completing the course might result in an increase to your income, you can claim a deduction for these self-education expenses. You can\u2019t claim on a course if it\u2019s only \u2018generally related\u2019 to your work activities, or if it enables you to get new employment. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What can\u2019t I claim back on tax?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many things you can claim back when it comes to tax time, however there are also many things that you can\u2019t &#8211; and sometimes it can be easy to get confused between the two! Here are a few things that you\u2019ll need to leave out of your next tax return. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Normal trips between home and work \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the cost of your regular commute (whether it\u2019s by car, train, bus or tram) is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/Individuals\/Income-and-deductions\/Deductions-you-can-claim\/Vehicle-and-travel-expenses\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not something<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can be claimed back on tax<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/Individuals\/Income-and-deductions\/Deductions-you-can-claim\/Vehicle-and-travel-expenses\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s viewed as \u2018private travel\u2019. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Conventional clothing \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although you may be able to claim back on uniforms and protective clothing needed specifically for your line of work, you can\u2019t claim for anything that\u2019s considered to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/individuals\/income-and-deductions\/deductions-you-can-claim\/clothing,-laundry-and-dry-cleaning-expenses\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018conventional clothing\u2019.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For example, if you work outside and wear long-sleeve shirts because your arms get sunburnt, this isn\u2019t deductible, as a long-sleeve shirt is okay to wear to and from work and can be classified as \u2018regular clothing\u2019. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What do I need to do to make a claim?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you had tax taken from any income that you made in the previous financial year, you need to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/Individuals\/Lodging-your-tax-return\/Lodging-your-first-tax-return\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lodge a tax return.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can either choose to lodge your tax return using an online service like the Australian Taxation Office\u2019s myTax portal, or you can use a tax agent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To lodge a tax return yourself, you\u2019ll need to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.gov.au\/LoginServices\/main\/login?execution=e2s1\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">register with myGov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and have your tax file number ready. It\u2019s important to make sure that you\u2019re organised before starting your tax return (although you can always save it and come back to it later) by making sure you have all your records and receipts ready to go. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, you can take your PAYG summaries, records and receipts to a tax agent and have them lodge your return for you.
