Cheap Weekend – How To Be Social On A Budget

April 12th, 2013

Being social can be tough – especially when you don’t have a lot of cash to throw around on super fun activities. AND, there’s nothing worse than having to turn down offers to go out with friends because you don’t have the funds. So what can you do? It’s easy.  Get organised and plan a weekend with your friends that suits your budget.

We’ve put together a list of some of the best cheap fun you can have.

(The best part is this stuff is so good, your friends won’t even suspect that your pulling some sneaky budget fun on them.)

Go on an adventure walk

Grab your friend, pack a backpack full of snacks, water and sunscreen and set off on an adventure walk. You could try getting up early with the sun and going for a beach walk, stopping for breakfast before you turn back. Or go for a drive to a nice bushwalking spot and pick a nice long track. Go on, get back to nature!

Host a mexican fiesta

Mexican food is super cheap to make. Grab some corn chips, beans, cheese, taco kits or whatever takes your fancy and put on a spread for your pals. Ask them to bring along some mexican beers or sangria and you’ve got yourself a party. Or, for a quiet night in, hire out some of your favourite mexican-inspired movies and eat your feast in front of the TV. Somberro not optional.

Everyone loves karaoke. It’s such a great night out that involves plenty of high notes and lots of laughs. If karaoke isn’t your thing, maybe try going to your local open mic night. It’s a cheap way to watch live music!

There are a HEAP of places you can volunteer your time in Australia. Pick something that interests you and bring your friends along. If you’re lucky, you might get to hang out with puppies for a day at your local animal shelter.

Road trip

Esky full of food and drinks? Check! Ultimate driving playlist? Check! Best friend in the passenger seat? Check! Go exploring! Pick a town in the middle of nowhere and go there. Have a picnic, have a drink with the locals, stay the night in a tent perhaps?

Have an ugly cake competition

Get each of your friends to bring over a cake ingredient and see who can make the ugliest cake.

Host a jam session

Message all your friends who play an instrument and get everyone round for some lazy sunday tunes. You never know, you might end up discovering some local homegrown talent.

Host a tournament

Head over to your local tennis courts or basketball hoops and hold a day-long tournament. Bring some tunes, outrageous sporting outfits and may the best man or woman win.

Budgeting for day to day life, can be hard, we know but it’s not impossible. So make the most of cheap nights and days and enjoy the company of friends.
